Common questions
I can't click or hover the constellation on my wallpaper.
Finder draws desktop icons on a layer above the wallpaper, so it catches those clicks. Open System Settings → Desktop & Dock, and under Show Items turn off On Desktop. Your Desktop files stay where they are and are still in Finder. Constelle's Settings → General has a button that opens the right place.
A folder says "Allow Access…" or the wallpaper asks me to allow access.
macOS only lets Constelle read folders you've allowed. This happens if a folder was moved or renamed, or if you used an earlier version of Constelle. Open Settings → Folders, click Allow Access… next to the folder, then click Allow. You only need to do this once per folder.
Voice search doesn't hear me.
Check that Constelle has microphone and speech recognition permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Voice search also needs on-device dictation for your language: open System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation and make sure your language is downloaded.
Does Constelle upload my files or folder names?
No. Constelle has no network code at all. It reads only the folders you allow, keeps everything on your Mac and never changes your files. See the Privacy Policy.
Will it slow down my Mac or drain my battery?
Constelle uses close to zero energy when idle. The animation pauses when the wallpaper is covered, the screen is locked or asleep, on battery (you can change this) and when Reduce Motion is on. You can also turn off Animate the constellation in Settings → Motion & Activity.
Some folders are missing, or I see dashed rings.
To stay clear and fast, Constelle shows up to 400 folders. Busy areas are grouped into clusters, drawn as dashed rings with a count. Click a cluster to open it up. Search still finds every folder inside. To see more detail somewhere, map that folder directly in Settings → Folders.
How do I use Constelle with Siri or Shortcuts?
Try "Search Constelle", "Show Projects in Constelle" or "How much space is left in Constelle". In the Shortcuts app, search for Constelle to see every action, including Search, Show Folder, Check Storage and Show Dashboard.
The dashboard isn't on my second screen.
Choose what each screen shows in Settings → Displays: the wallpaper constellation or the dashboard. On a single screen, press ⌃⌥Space to summon the dashboard over whatever you're doing, and press it again or Esc to dismiss it.
How do I erase my search history?
Open Settings → Search & Memory and click Forget Everything…. You can also turn off Remember searches or choose how many days history is kept.
How do I uninstall Constelle completely?
Quit Constelle from the menu bar, then drag it from Applications to the Trash. Its settings and search memory live in ~/Library/Containers/com.sksamy.Constelle; delete that folder too to remove everything.
